Projet BeaucéantThe House of Aiguaviva

Espagne, province de Gérone, à environ 8 km au sud-ouest du centre de Gérone, commune de Aiguaviva.

Virtually nothing is known about when the Knights Templar first settled in Aiguaviva. Some sources mention the year 1192, others 1208, but without providing any details.

Nevertheless, a document dated 1208 mentions a commander in Aiguaviva named Berenguer d'Arbós, which allows us to conclude that the commandery did indeed exist at that time and had probably been in existence for several years.

In 1245, another document refers to the commandery, naming it "domus Militie de Aiguaviva".

The commandery consisted of a large agricultural estate with an adjoining chapel dedicated to Saint Mary Magdalene. The commandery also owned estates near Girona and a chapel dedicated to Saint Mary of Madrenys in the parish of Vilablareix(1).

When the Order of the Temple was dissolved in 1312, the Aiguaviva estate was transferred to the Hospitallers of Saint John. They continued to manage and expand the estate until the 19th century.

In 1660, a priory visitation provided a detailed description of the entire built estate of Aiguaviva. This description corresponds almost exactly to the current state of the buildings.
